Travel Tips to Breeze Through Airport Security
Travelers often dread going to the airport due to the long lines, security pat downs and overall coldness that is generally the norm during travel. While people aren’t entirely off-base with their perception, there is so much that travelers can do themselves to help make their next visit to the airport much more tolerable and – dare we say – easy. Follow the below advice the next time you are preparing to depart for corporate travel:
Check in online. This is one of the easiest things that you can do pre-travel to help make your next business trip a little less frustrating. With so many different ways to do this (airline website via your computer, tablet or phone and the airline app via your tablet or phone), there is no excuse not to take the 90 seconds it takes 24 hours before your scheduled departure to check in.
Keep your ID and paperwork handy. There is something about the chaos that is airport security that often results in losing sight of important documents – boarding passes and passports can easily end up at the bottom of a purse or thoughtlessly put in a jacket pocket that of course you have to remove to go through As soon as you enter the security line, have your boarding pass and ID at the ready.
Dress the part. Don’t make things harder on yourself than they need to be. Skip shoes with intricate buckles and even laces in favor of slip on loafers, flats or sling backs. If wearing a jacket is a must, have it off and in your arms before reaching the security scanners. Keep your belt in an outside pocket in your carry-on until after you’ve gone through security to avoid the step of removing it. Other clothing items and accessories better left for after you’ve gone through security: scarfs, hats, excess jewelry and hoodies.
Follow the 3-1-1 rule. If you’re a frequent business traveler, you know the rules. However, it bears repeating for those that are new to corporate travel or for those that are just woefully oblivious that they aren’t following these guidelines. The 3-1-1 rule stands for 3.4 ounces of liquid (including gel, lotions, etc.) in 1 quart-sized clear plastic bag limited to 1 bag per person. Have this bag in an easily accessible spot in your carry-on for your convenience during airport security.
Consider TSA Pre-Check or Global Entry. TSA Pre-Check and Global Entry are investments that can help us reclaim the long-lost commodity that is time by expediting Trusted Travelers through security lines at the airport. By becoming a valued TSA Pre-Check or Global Entry member, you have the ability to practically dance through security – no removing your shoes, jackets or belts, no removing your liquids bag or laptop from your carry-on.
Remember, travel smarter not harder.
